Streptococcus pneumoniae
This assay is only available as part of a panel and cannot be ordered individually.
Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcal disease, is a facultative anaerobic gram positive coccus that is found as normal flora in the nasopharynx of healthy carriers. Pneumococcal disease causes pneumonia, ear infections, blood stream infections, acute sinusitis, septic arthritis and more. S. pneumoniae is one of the most common causes of bacterial meningitis in adults and young adults. High risk persons are adults 65 and older, children younger than two, and those with weakened immune systems. It is also more common in developing countries. In severe infections, pneumococcal disease can cause hearing loss, brain damage and death.
