Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are lung-infecting pathogens, especially affecting those with compromised lung function or weakened immune systems. A 2010 study found about 30 per 100,000 people in the U.S. were infected, and NTM is now more common than tuberculosis. These bacteria are found in the environment and can form biofilms, making treatment challenging. Early diagnosis is key to managing NTM lung disease, as delays can worsen health outcomes. We recently launched a PCR assay to help clinicians detect NTM more effectively, ultimately improving patient care and quality of life.
