Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative aerobic bacterium found in soil and water. P. aeruginosa is the most common pathogen isolated from patients who have been hospitalized longer than 1 week—making it a frequent cause of severe hospital-acquired infections. It is resistant to multiple antibiotics and associated with a high mortality rate in the immunocompromised population.
